History

Auberge du Faubourg1937 - The hotel business in St-Jean-Port-Joli is enriched by the birth of the Auberge du Faubourg. The result of the efforts of Mr. Léonard Bourgault. At this time, the establishment was a small inn located at the "faubourg" of the village, the inner suburb, in Cyprien Bourgault's property, Léonard's father.

1941 - Léonard Bourgault undertakes the construction on a new inn, on a vast piece of land that is approximately 130 acres, located along the St-Lawrence River, the same site the inn is still located on. At this time, there was just the main building with 24 rooms, a vast lobby and a tavern. For many years, the tavern was the only place where it was possible to buy beer.

Auberge du Faubourg1948 - It was June 27th when the Auberge du Faubourg welcomed a large political assembly, with Mr. Maurice Duplessis. Many other personalities have stayed at the Auberge; Louis St-Laurent, Jean Lesage, Daniel Johnson, Pierre-Elliot Trudeau...

1954 - Construction begins, building by building. The Auberge is becoming the complex we see today, set back from the village.

1979 - At the age of 70, Mr. Léonard Bourgault passed away, leaving the Auberge du Faubourg to his trusted employees: Hélène Fortin, Jocelyne Caron and Roland Legros. The three-way management was hard. They decided to put the Auberge up for sale.

1980 - Mr. Roland Joncas, former director at the hospital in Rimouski, become co-owner. After some time, Mr. Joncas' associate decided to get out of the project, a move which provoked the sale of the inn.

1986 - Mr. Jacques Chamard and Ms. Pauline Thériault, became the new innkeepers of the Auberge du Faubourg.

1991 - Mr. Chamard organised festivities to mark the 50th anniversary of the Auberge du Faubourg. A chance to look back at the projects accomplished by Mr. Léonard Bourgault. Festivities last all summer and are very beneficial to the inn.

Auberge du Faubourg2000 - Jean Cyr, already owner of the renowned Manoir des Érables in Montmagny, acquires the inn. He invests time and money, restores the majority of the rooms, beautifies the grounds and offers many new services to the clientele. Jean Cyr opens, with his wife Claudette Simoneau, massage therapist, a health spa "Parfum de Mer". At the same time, the bar "Le Lobby" is opening its doors, with its bold decor and terrace overlooking the St-Lawrence River. The Philippe Aubert de Gaspé restaurant, named after the first seigneur of St-Jean-Port-Joli, is now operated by Pascal Androdias, cook head who comes from the mother country of the gastronomy, France. His years of experiences of using regional products will delight your palate... Today, gastronomy takes a big place in the quality of Auberge du Faubourg and emphasizes most of the regional products.

2001 - With its numerous improvement on several aspects, the Auberge du Faubourg received the price of "Prix de l'hébergement 2001" at the annual event "Grand prix du Tourisme Québécois"!!!

2002 - The Auberge du Faubourg received "la mention spéciale site Internet" at the annual event "Grand prix du Tourisme Québécois"!!!

2007 - Auberge du Faubourg offers now healthy stays with activities. The site proposes you, many activities as soft gymnastic with a qualified coach. For a soothing stop Auberge du Faubourg is a prime choice in the region Chaudière-Appalaches.

Since its establishment, the Auberge du Faubourg has always honoured local artists, wood and wood sculptures will always be king here. Take the time to appreciate many wood sculptures created by the celebrated Bourgault family!
